Nestled on the edge of a leadwood and fig tree forest, overlooking the vast Khwai River floodplains and beyond into the Moremi Wildlife Reserve, sits the luxurious Khwai River Lodge. Here you are close to Africa's heartbeat, at the centre of a world that has not altered much since life began. You can sense the big game heritage from the moment you arrive.

Khwai is world-renowned for its large concentrations of big mammals such as elephant, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah and wild dog, and it is not unusual to see many of these animals from the privacy of your own tentdeck. As wildlife is found here throughout the year, their predators are also active year round, making Khwai one of the most sought after locations for viewing wildlife and the perennial drama of the African bushveld. Birdlife is also abundant with exceptional sightings of raptors.

Activities offered at the camp include morning and afternoon game drives in open Land cruisers, as well as after-dark spotlight game drives. A cultural visit to the local village can be arranged, as well as guided safari walks along the Khwai River.

For those wishing to enjoy further pampering, the lodge has a 'Naturally Wild' gym and spa facility. Guests are able to enjoy indulgent massages and body wraps in the spa or in the privacy of their own tent.

The impressions formed here will stay with you forever - driving through the bush into a herd of elephant, the sound of lion roaring in the distance, a family of baboons squabbling across the river, the lullaby of nesting birds as you sit contemplating the day's activities, the luxurious comfort of the camps and the friendliness of the staff all contribute to an unforgettable experience and that very special freedom that comes from 'getting away from it all'.

Accommodation at Orient-Express Camps includes all meals, drinks, game viewing activities, national park fees, laundry services and emergency evacuation.

Included in your stay at Eagle Island Camp is a spectacular and mind-blowing game-viewing helicopter flight, the images and impressions which will probably stay with you for a very long time. The open sides of the helicopter will allow you to take the most fantastic photographs, to capture this experience forever.

Situated on the island of Xaxaba, this cool retreat, shaded by a canopy of indigenous trees and Ilala Palms, overlooks a surrounding lagoon fed by the tranquil waterways of the Delta. The area offers prolific birdlife and mammal sightings. It is also the site of one of the most romantic bars in the world, the Fish Eagle Bar, as quoted by The New York Times.

Eagle Island Camp is one of the Delta's most pristine natural locations with its myriad waterways, palm-treed islands and vast floodplains. From April through to October the camp also offers game viewing by mokoro (traditional dugout canoe) or by motorised boat, which is particularly enjoyable as you sip your sundowner at the end of the day.

When water levels are low (December through March), morning, afternoon and evening game drives are available. And for the intrepid and the energetic, safari walks are offered all year round.

The Okavango Delta is one of the world's largest inland water systems, the only inland Delta of its kind, and a unique oasis of life in the centre of the Kalahari Desert. It stretches over 16,000 square km and supports a staggering variety of animal, plant, fish and birdlife. Due to a series of tectonic movements and earthquakes running along the geological fault lines of the Great African Rift, the land at the edge of the Delta now lies lower than that of the surrounding area and hence the water very rarely flows further south than the little town of Maun. It consists of a multitude of main channels, smaller tributaries and lagoons, as well as floodplains, islands and mainland areas. The watercourses are constantly changing due to annual flooding as well as the movement of sediment, seismic activity, the construction of termite mounds and the continual opening up of new channels by feeding hippopotami and the closing of others by new vegetation growth.

Perched on the banks of the now flowing Savute Channel, with an elevated view of the river (formerly a well-populated elephant waterhole!), Savute Elephant Camp is a spectacular base from which to explore the area. Drama unfolds here daily with interactions between the high concentrations of elephant, the lion prides (sometimes up to 40 strong), the endangered wild dog, leopard, cheetah and the hyena.

Savute is also renowned for its excellent birding during the summer months (December through March), as well as being home to some very rare rock paintings by Bushmen who once inhabited the region, and its little forests of ancient Baobabs.

This camp is set on the banks of the Khwai river which during the dry months of the year is the only source of permanent water in the whole area. This area is most famous for its raptor populations - Martiale Agles, Secretary Birds, Bateleurs and a whole host of little Raptors comprise the main feature of this area. There are wonderful water birds to be found along the Khwai river and this river is fairly open and makes for easy birding, birds to look out for are Purple Gallinule, Saddle Billed Stork, Black Stork, Kingfishers, Slatey Egret and a whole host of little Waders.Surrounding woodland comprises mainly of Mopane and there are a number of birds to look out for here; a big special for the area is the Arnot's Chat and Hartlub's Babblers. A trip up to Xaxanka ("kakanika") is also a worthwhile trip as this takes you up onto part of the permanent swamp. Khwai boasts over 300 species and is well worth the trip, recommended stay at this camp is two nights. Khwai is also our flagship camp in so far as game is concerned; you are guaranteed to see almost all of your large mammal species and it is a first class destination to try and find that elusive leopard.

KRL - indulgent treatments

Savute Elephant Camp

Savute Elephant Camp is based on the edge of the Savute Marsh and of the three camps is the driest. Primarily a desert habitat this area abounds with desert and savannah birds. On the Marsh one can find the largest flying birds in great numbers - Kori Bustard, Ground Hornbills, Ostrich and Northern Black Orhaan. This area also abounds with LBJ's - Ayers, Desert Cisticolas and a large number of Pipits and Larks. This is also one of the few places to view the Bradfield's Hornbill which is also a true desert Species. More than 250 birds species are found at Savute and most of them are endemic to the area. Summer is a wonderful time to visit as it is lush and green and the area abounds with all the summer migrants as they follow the Rift Valley south. Savute is also well renowned for its elephant and lion populations and can often add to the experience and memories of a trip to this area.

Eagle Island Camp

This would be the highlight of any birders trip as this is truly a birders destination. Eagle Island boasts almost 400 bird species and has by far more specials than the other two camps put together. As the name suggests this is a water camp and during times when the flood that fills the Okavango Delta is good then the camp is totally cut off from the mainland. The water birds here are out of this world; specials include regular sightings of the infamous Pel's Fishing Owl, Black Coucal, Long Toed Plovers, Brown Fire Finches and a whole host of other specials. Wattled Cranes are also a big feature with flocks of up to 200 have been recorded. Eagle Island Camp's serene watery base lends itself to quiet relaxation, contemplation and reflection. If, however, you are looking for adventure and excitement then Eagle Island will not disappoint - from walking safaris on surrounding islands, where there is always the possibility of a close encounter, to mokoro and motor boat excursions around the myriad of waterways, the diversity and propensity of the wildlife will fascinate the most seasoned of travelers to Africa. During the months of November through March, when lower water levels make it possible to drive our open 4x4 vehicles off the island, guests can also enjoy the combined excitement of a game drive with water activity.
