The Manor at Samara

The Manor at Samara is for the exclusive use of up to 8 guests in ultimate luxury and total privacy with every whim being anticipated by friendly but unobtrusive staff. You will arrive at this historic homestead and upon entering, breathtaking views of this extraordinary Karoo mountain landscape will unfold over a 21m infinity pool which descents into a waterhole at which game can be present in the early morning and later afternoon. Relax in four spacious luxury air-conditioned suites. Beds are made up with the softest linen that lulls you to sleep and all suites have large en-suite bathrooms with separate showers and free standing baths. Unwind in the large comfortable lounge where a crackling fire burns in the winter months and the large glass doors to the patio are cast wide open in the summer. Take time to read an interesting book from the library in the cosy reading nooks. Dining experiences include boma, veranda, dining-room and breakfast room as well as various bush dining experiences.

Mountain Retreat

Secluded, wild and remote, Samara's Mountain Retreat offers you the experience of yesteryear and the opportunity to re-connect with nature in its purest form. The Mountain Retreat is an exclusive use venue accommodating up to 10 guests. There are three delightful double en-suite bedrooms in the main homestead and a further two en-suite bedrooms are situated in the beautifully restored Victorian barn. Take leisurely walks to explore the ancient valley landscape where rare rock art paintings of cheetah are preserved. Guests will be accompanied on walks by an experienced ranger who will be able to point out all the little things one may miss on a game drive. Delicious home-cooked meals are served in various venues – the dining-room, under the stars in the boma or on the veranda. The Mountain Retreat is the perfect getaway for a family or group of friends wanting to escape from the hustle and bustle and return to a slower pace and experience the true wilderness.

Karoo Lodge

Surrounded by a natural amphitheatre of mountains, Karoo Lodge sits in perfect serenity with the reserve's pristine wilderness. The lodge treats you with exceptional service, meaning you can kick back and allow the tranquility of the Karoo to enter our soul.

Luxury Colonial style Karoo cottages and rooms in the restored homestead offer relaxed comfort and style. The Karoo Lodge consists of 3 luxury suites within the lodge and 3 private Karoo suites separate from the lodge. All of the suites are developed to the same high standard and have similar traditional decor. Each suite is complete with a large en-suite bathroom and shower, air-conditioning and private porch. Karoo Lodge can accommodate up to 12 guests, keeping it intimate and exclusive.

Whether you dine in the boma, under the stars or picnic overlooking the romantic plains of Camdeboo, you will savour the flavours of our mouth-watering cuisine hand selected and produced from our Karoo Kitchen. Meals are all served with quality wines selected from our cellar.

Samara is one of the largest private reserves in South Africa. It is located 55km from Graaff-Reinet and just 258km from Port Elizabeth. There is a wonderful sense of space at Samara. The reserve encompasses the southern flank of the Sneeuberg mountain range and the Karoo lodge is nestled below the escarpment. The reserve extends at the lower elevations and comprises part of the famous Plains of Camdeboo. Three dry rivers the Apies River, Melk River and Plat River traverse the property. At the higher elevations the property has two plateaus extending to thousands of hectares.

Some of the earliest explorers who crossed the Karoo included Le Vaillant and David Livingstone and have written about it as a land of secret beauty and infinite variety. The rock paintings reflect the past presence of the Khoi-San tribe and the fossils dating back to 250 million years have also been found in the area. The Plains of Camdeboo are also the home to the great annual Springbok migrations that took place.

The Samara Private Game Reserve is home to White Rhino, Cape Mountain Zebra, Cheetah, Buffalo, Leopard Tortoise, Wilderbeest, Giraffe, Herds of antelope, Aardvark, Meerkat and many others. There is also over 180 species of bird including Secretary Birds, Black Eagle, Blue Cranes, White Storks and Kori Bustards.

Directions

Samara Private Game Lodge

• Take the N1 through Bloemfontein to Colesberg . Where the road splits, take the N9 to Middelburg and Graaff-Reinet.
• From Graaff-Reinet, take the Port Elizabeth road out of town for approximately 26 kms where you will come to the R 63 marked Pearston / Somerset-East (Blue Crane Route). Turn left and travel + 7 km and at the Samara Game Reserve sign turn left on to Petersburg Road.
• Follow the road through the reserve - approximately 24km and half an hour’s driving time - (phone us from first electric gate to let us know you are on the property), through the double electric gates, and follow the signs to Karoo Lodge, Guest Reception.
