About Springbok Lodge

Nambiti Private Game Reserve is a private Big Five and Wonderful Seven bush retreat and game conservancy set on 20,000 acres of malaria-free bushveld in KwaZulu Natal. It has an incredible biodiversity including savannah, grasslands, thornveld and tall acacia trees. The Sundays River flows through the reserve and has two 40-metre waterfalls with magnificent ravine bush, home to several rare bird species The Nambiti Private Game Reserve has three times the carrying capacity of regions like Botswana and is the only reserve in the region with the big five. We currently have over thirty other species of game including giraffe, hippo, hyena, impala, springbok, and zebra. Encounter one of these magnificent animals only 3½ hours from Johannesburg and 2½ hours from Durban. The spirit of Africa will fill your soul and the experience will stay with you forever. The roar of lions and the ambience of a traditional boma will make you want to return, year after year.

The Nambiti Private Game Reserve is situated 25 km's east of Ladysmith and is only 3½ hours from Johannesburg, 2½ hours from Durban and 40 minutes from the Drakensberg

Springbok Lodge, within this Conservancy, is co-owned by John Smit and Percy Montgomery, this lodge is ideal for large groups and has fantastic conferencing facilities ideal for conferences, corporate incentives and team building. The Lodge accommodates up to 28 guests in luxury tents, with a high altitude sports facility in the pipeline, this is a must for all sports enthusiasts.

The 14 up-market and beautifully appointed tented units, each with spectacular views over the landscape and mountains beyond, are well spaced for total privacy and include an en-bathroom, veranda and outdoor shower with great views of the bushveld.

Directions to Springbok Lodge
By Road

From Johannesburg

  • Head for DURBAN on the N3.
  • Once you have entered KwaZulu Natal via Van Reenen, look out for the Ladysmith Toll off-ramp and go through it (pay R27.00). This is at the bottom of Van Reenen's Pass.
  • Continue straight on R103 to Ladysmith
  • When you arrive in Ladysmith, drive straight through – you will be on the road called HARRISMITH STREET, (look out for the following landmarks on this road) BP Petrol / Gas Station on the left, traffic lights then Caltex Petrol / Gas station on the left. Continue on… (landmark : FET College on the left)
  • At the 3 way traffic light intersection keep right till you get to the next set of 4 way traffic lights. (landmark: SHELL Petrol / Gas station on the right) and Police Station on Left.
  • TURN LEFT into Murchison Street. Continue on down Murchison Street going through 2 sets of traffic lights. At the third set (landmark: CALTEX Petrol / Gas Station on the right) TURN RIGHT and then TURN LEFT at the traffic light intersection. Continue on this road (landmark : BP Petrol / Gas Station on the right)
  • On the outskirts of Ladysmith you will find another set of traffic lights and a 4 way intersection – travel on straight – in the direction of NEWCASTLE (this is the N11). Continue until you see our brown NAMBITI sign on the left as well as a small sign which reads D45. (Distance from Caltex to N11+D45 intersection = 10.9km)
  • Turn Right onto the D45 (a hard surface gravel road), travel for 10,3kms; turn right at the Y-Junction (onto the D46) and travel for 2 km until you reach the entrance to Nambiti Private Game Reserve (Electric Gate and Thatched Gate-house).
  • Our gate guard will direct you to the undercover parking area where our ranger will meet you and transfer you on an open game viewer to the lodge.

Please note that cellphone reception in this area is erratic.


From Durban

  • Travel on the N3 through Mooi River Toll Gate (R32.00), past Escourt to Ladysmith (direction Harrismith / Johannesburg).
  • After Escourt take the Colenso / R103 / R74 off-ramp, turn right at the top of the off ramp and travel past Colenso towards Ladysmith / Newcastle.
  • Cross the bridge (Klip River [also known as First Wagon Bridge] into Ladysmith and continue following the directions to Newcastle on the N11. Keep an eye out for the following land marks: Marks Tyres on left, Game on left and Kentucky Fried Chicken on left.
  • At the traffic light intersection with Maxi’s Restaurant & Caltex Petrol Station on the left – continue straight on; over the railway bridge and past TFS on the left and under the railway bridge.
  • On the outskirts of Ladysmith you will find another set of traffic lights and a 4 way intersection – travel on straight – in the direction of NEWCASTLE (this is the N11).
