About The Lodge & The Reserve

About Rocktail Beach Camp

Rocktail Beach Camp is located about 30 minutes’ drive from Rocktail Bay Lodge and is situated at the current Rocktail Dive Centre. The camp is set back in and shaded by the sanctuary of the lush coastal forest that covers the ancient dunes that make up the edge of South Africa’s north-east coast.

Rocktail Bay is situated within the coastal forest just behind the forested dunes that occur along Maputaland’s coastline. This camp is set within iSimangaliso (formerly Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park, one of South Africa’s World Heritage Sites, while situated offshore is the Maputaland Marine Reserve, which offers sanctuary to prolific marine life including coral reefs, huge shoals of fish, and various dolphin and whale. The warm Indian Ocean lies just beyond the dunes and on one of the most incredible beaches in all of South Africa.

With nearly 40 kilometres of unspoilt, pristine coastline, where the waves meet endless stretches of beach, it is possible to walk for hours without meeting another soul or seeing a building.

On land, this lush area abounds with a variety of animals, birds and plant life that provide a natural counterpoint to the bushveld. Common reedbucks sometimes frequent the marshes and grasslands together with shy red duiker and Tongaland red squirrel in the forested areas. Hippo are found in freshwater lakes. Birding is outstanding, with a number of typical coastal forest species – Green Twinspot, Green Malkoha, Grey Waxbill, Purple-crested and Livingstone’s Turacos, Red-capped Robin-chat and the jewel-like African Emerald Cuckoo in the forests, while Rosy-throated Longclaw and a host of other species are found in the coastal grasslands.

Few sections of the South African coastline are as unspoilt and secluded as the area in the vicinity of Rocktail Bay. The bay received its name after a trawling ship, the Rocktail, was wrecked offshore many years ago, but it is known today for its superlative, pristine dive spots as well as the loggerhead and leatherback turtles that come to lay their eggs and hatch on the beaches.

  • Turtle Walks in season (mid October to mid March)
Every year Loggerhead and Leatherback turtles come ashore from about mid-October to mid-March around Rocktail Bay to lay their eggs on these pristine beaches.

During this period, the KwaZulu-Natal Nature Conservation Service officials patrol the beaches by vehicle. They note where the turtles lay their eggs, the number of eggs, weight, etc. On night’s during this period, we go out looking for the turtles on the beach after dark. PLEASE NOTE THAT TIMINGS ARE ALL DEPENDANT ON LOW TIDE.
The manager may also arrange for any guest who is interested in “adopting” a tagged turtle as their own, and any subsequent information relating to this turtle will be relayed to the guest in future years. For this opportunity a donation to the Maputaland Conservation Project will be required from the guest concerned.
From mid-January until about mid-March, the hatchlings come out and are counted, notched, weighed etc before entering the sea.
