About The Lodge & The Reserve

About Makalali Private Game Lodge
Makalali offers a truly unique experience. Nestled on 22 000 hectares of conservancy, Makalali prevails as one of the finest private game lodges in the world. Four exclusive camps, each consisting of six spacious suites adjacent to a stilted Sala set amongst Jackalberry trees, are equipped with all the modern conveniences you could wish for. The rooms are individually decorated in African design styles with sculptured metalwork lampshades and taps with ceramic basins. Mosquito nets surround the king-size beds at night. Insect repellent, hairdryers and bathrobes are provided.

Makalali consists of four camps - Tandane, Phiva, Mkhiwa and Emtomeni. Each camp has its own personal touch and is run separately. All the camps include a uniquely designed swimming pool, boma, air-conditioning, and an enclosed dining and lounge area luxury suites with en-suite bathroom, outdoor shower, fireplace and raised timber 'sala' (this is a private viewing deck/lounge) where guests can enjoy their own time, also creating the ideal spot for a private luncheon or dinner.

The bathroom facilities are airy with an outside shower for those hot days or starry evenings. Victorian style baths are in all the rooms for whenever the weather chases us in, each room also has its own fireplace fully stocked with logs from the reserve.

The architecture dictates the style of food they serve, combining unexpected flavours. The food style at Makalali is culinary adventure, combining regional cuisine from all over Africa with the multitude of cooking styles left behind by centuries of exploration on this great continent.

At Makalali, they provide an array of dining experiences. Enjoy Africa under the stars with dinner in the bush or the legendary 'boma dinner'. Other options include the indoor-outdoor dining area where you can enjoy a plated dinner or the more casual family style dining with other guests.

Makalali offers a group entertainment / conference centre situated at Tandane camp. The centre consists of a unique thatch-covered main building, an open kitchen and entertainment area. Flame torches create a mystical and fiery African ambience at night.

Game Drives in open Landrovers are conducted twice daily. The lodge offers birding safaris, walking safaris, stargazing sessions and team building activities. Tribal Dancing/Drumming can be arranged and these activities are performed by local dancers.

About the Makalali Private Game Reserve

The Reserve, founded in 1994, consists of 26 000 hectares of Lowveld Acacia bush and open savanna grass land and all surrounding the lush river.
Makalali Private Game Reserve represents a conservation mission to expand South Africa's green frontier by re-establishing the ancient wildlife migration routes that linked the famous Kruger Park in the east to the lush Drakensberg Mountains in the west. In the process lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and rhino have all been reintroduced to the wild, making Makalali home to over one thousand wild animals including all of Africa's "Big Five".

Unlike the reserves along Kruger National Park borders, Makalali's Bushland is undulating with elevated viewpoints giving panoramic views of the reserve. The expansive area is covered with Jackalberry, Knobthorn, and Marula trees.
