About The Lodge & The ReserveAbout Mhondoro
Mhondoro Lodge is situated in the Welgevonden Game Reserve which consists of 42 000 hectares of unspoiled African Bushveld ranging from rocky outcrops where the leopards watch from their hidden crevices to wide open savannah where the herds of Zebra, Wildebeest and Impala abound.
The Reserve is divided by the three main rivers that meander quietly through densely wooded areas on their way to joining the mighty Limpopo River. It is part of the larger United Waterberg Biosphere and is entirely Malaria Free. Founded in 1993, The Reserve is one of the largest private investments in conservation in the world. Welgevonden supports 75 species of animals, including the Big Five (Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Buffalo and Rhinoceros) and over 350 species of birds. It boasts an amazing variety of antelope from the dainty Klipspringer to the mighty Eland and is home to the largest private population of white rhino in the world. Game viewing is done in specially designed open vehicles equipped with elevated seating. The paths to the main lodge and between the chalets offer tantalizing glimpses of the waterhole situated just in front of the lodge. The Main Lodge has a large viewing sundeck where guests are welcome to bide away the time. The crystal clear swimming pool is blessedly cool and inviting on hot summer days under the African sun. The central dining room, bar, outdoor Boma, Spa and Gym are all situated in or around the Main Lodge and are easily accessible from the chalets. A nearby chalet houses a library and entertainment centre. Four luxuriously appointed private Villas, including the Presidential, two bedroomed Thlou Villa, are located along the ridge overlooking the waterhole and adjacent plains with the Waterberg Mountains in the distance. A maximum of 10 guests may stay at the lodge, ensuring personal attention and care from your hosts at all times. Each Villa has its own elegant sense of style and decor, designed to make you feel pampered, spoiled and special. The bedroom doors exit onto your private viewing sundeck where you can relax and watch Africa pass by below you. The en-suite bathrooms have a choice of indoor shower, giant sized bath or a secluded outdoor shower where you can pelt yourself with steaming hot water. Dining is an experience at Mhondoro. Breakfasts, after your early morning game drive, are either full English breakfasts at the lodge or 'bush breakfasts' in the wild. Afternoon tea will be served shortly before your afternoon game drive. Three course dinners range from superb local cuisine served at the lodge's dining room to braais served in the open air Boma around a wood fire under the African skies. Mhondoro boasts a wine cellar fully stocked with the best South African wines. Driving through the reserve in the 4 wheel drive game viewing vehicle, after your arrival at the main gate, you will be treated to your first sighting of the reserve's permanent residents: Impala, Warthog, Giraffe, Rhino, Kudu, Eland, Elephant and many others. Your hosts are knowledgeable and friendly and will keep you entertained throughout your stay. Their love of the bush is infectious and you'll soon find yourself eagerly waiting for the next animal anecdote or titbit of information. Guests are treated to snacks and a welcome drink at the Main Gate Lapa and are then transferred directly to the Lodge. Sun-downers and snacks are served on the evening game drives. The rangers usually choose magnificent spots such as atop a mountain ridge where you can stand and stare at the majestic beauty around you and enjoy a fine South African chardonnay. Hot beverages and snacks will keep you warm on the early morning drives. Bush walks are offered with fully qualified rangers. These vary with the weather and the desires of the guests. Along with some of the larger animals you may well see some of the "Little Five"- Elephant Shrew, Leopard Tortoise, Rhino Beetle, Buffalo Weaver and Ant Lion. Your rangers are extremely knowledgeable about the bush and you will soon find yourself absorbed in the wonders of this magical eco- system. If you are interested in Bushman Paintings we can organise a day trip that will transport you back 2000 years when Welgevonden was the home of the San people. Mhondoro offers its visitors the opportunity to view some of the only surviving rock art from the indigenous San people who lived in the Waterberg region. Lodge Features
About Welgevonden Game Reserve Rolling wooded mountains cut by deep rocky ravines and majestic gorges make Welgevonden Private Game Reserve an evocative piece of Africa. Aptly meaning ‘well found’, this is a place of rare and rugged beauty, plentiful wildlife and prolific birdlife. Spectacular scenery and excellent game viewing make Welgevonden quite unlike anywhere else on earth. To visit here is to experience the spirit of true wilderness. Welgevonden is home to over 50 different mammals, including the Big Five, and boasts one of the largest populations of white rhino on a private reserve anywhere in Africa. There are rare and unusual species too, such as brown hyena, aardwolf and aardvark – all best seen at night. The grassy plains abound with antelope from the largest eland to the diminutive duiker, and cheetah, lion and leopard are always close by. It is the diversity of habitat on the reserve that encourages such a wide range of wildlife as well as over 250 bird species, including rare blue cranes. At 36 000 hectares in size, Welgevonden Private Game Reserve lies in the Waterberg plateau, just north of Johannesburg. Here guests enjoy unlimited traversing through the reserve and experience an environment where biodiversity conservation and game viewing are managed in harmony. Welgevonden protects a unique and special environment and the reserve’s management is deeply committed to on-going conservation research and development. The evocative wilderness area offers an exclusive, intimate experience of the African bush with only a limited number of guests having access to the reserve at any one time. No private vehicles are permitted, which ensures minimal human impact and the ultimate wilderness experience. Historically, wildlife on the reserve has never been hunted so game viewing is always up close and personal. There is also ancient and delicate Bushman rock art on Welgevonden. Welgevonden offers the discerning visitor something completely different. This is mountain Bushveld with rivers running through it and sweeping views to far horizons. It’s high altitude, temperate climate and being malaria free makes it worth a visit all year round. Welgevonden is certainly one of the finest places to watch wildlife, sense wilderness and touch the spirit of true Africa. DirectionsDirections to Mhondoro Lodge
