The North West Province of South Africa is bounded on the north by Botswana, on the south by the provinces of Free State and the Northern Cape, and on the northeast and east by the Limpopo Province and Gauteng. Covering 118,797 sq km (45,869 sq miles), the North West Province was created in 1994 by the merger of Bophuthatswana, one of the former bantustans (or black homelands), and the western part of Transvaal, one of the four former South African provinces. The North West Province is reclaiming its reputation as one of the top wildlife areas in South Africa with large tracts of farmland being returned to the natural abundance of its past. Experience the success of Operation Phoenix, the largest translocation of wildlife in the world, at Madikwe Game Reserve or combine the delights of Africa's gaming capital, Sun City, with big game at Pilanesberg National Park. The North West game reserves are malaria free and within easy reach of the major centres of Johannesburg and Pretoria allowing for complete peace of mind during your safari holiday. The game reserves offer a selection of safari lodges ranging from rustic comfort to unadulterated luxury. The wide range caters for all budgets and needs providing families and couples with the ideal safari holiday. |
