About Madikwe Game Reserve

Madikwe Game Reserve encompasses an isolated slice of Africa’s most pristine wilderness regions in the North West Province of South Africa, adjacent to the Botswana border. The reserve is one of very few malaria free safari destinations and has a generally mild to hot climate, with overnight temperatures dropping in winter. This distinct conservation area, the fourth largest game reserve in South Africa, offers an unparalleled eco-safari teeming with magnificent wildlife encounters and a wealth of plant and bird species.

Launched in 1991 as a joint venture embracing the North West Parks and Tourism Board, the private sector and local communities, Madikwe comprises 75 000 hectares (185 329 acres) of untamed Africa. It is one of the few game reserves in the world to be proclaimed purely on the grounds of being the most appropriate and sustainable land use for an area.

What used to be farm land is now restored to its former natural environment with over 10 000 animals and 27 species reintroduced into the reserve owing to the success of Operation Phoenix – the largest translocation of game ever undertaken.

The close-knit involvement of the local community serves as an exemplary template for other game reserves and ensures a healthy local employment rate in the reserve.
