About The Lodge & area

Situated between Victoria Falls & Livingstone in Zambia, Royal Chundu Zambezi River Lodge is a place of absolute solitude and unspoilt beauty where nature is untouched. It is a destination where guests can journey back in time.

Spacious suites and lounging areas masterfully blend colonial elegance and African charm offering luxurious thatched accommodation in 14 beautiful villas. Of these, 10 are perched on the banks of the Zambezi, while 4 private suites with their own lounge, dining and pool area are located on Katomboro Island 4 kilometres upstream from the main lodge. Villas are exquisitely decorated reflecting a bygone era of comfort in the wild. The “Out of Africa” is completed by your own private deck facing the magnificent Zambezi River.

Rhodesian teak hardwood suites complemented by thatched roofs create a lodge that sits in perfect harmony with its pristine natural riverene surroundings. The plant and birdlife is carefully preserved by matching elevated teak walkways that connect the suites with main areas and infinity edge swimming pool.

Zambia's tourist capital the historic town of Livingstone has become one of the best traveling destinations in Africa. Most visitors come for Victoria Falls, but the town has attractions of its own - a genteel colonial history combined with a very African ambience. Livingstone is only a short distance from the falls and is not far from the national parks.

The large but tidy Livingstone Museum Mosi-oa-Tunya Rd; is the oldest museum in Zambia. Highlights are the Tonga ritual artifacts, life-size model African village, a collection of David Livingstone memorabilia and display of maps dating back to 1690.

Mukuni is a local village of about 7000 Leya people. Tourists can visit the village to find out more about their traditional way of life, while the admission fee helps fund community projects.

The village is 18km (11mi) southwest of Livingstone and only accessible by taxi.

Described by the Kololo tribe living in the area in the 1800’s as ‘Mosi-oa-Tunya’ - Victoria Falls is a spectacular sight on the Zambezi River, bordering Zambia and Zimbabwe.

Columns of spray can be seen from far away as 546 million cubic meters of water per minute plummet over the edge (at the height of the flood season) over a width of nearly two kilometers into a deep gorge over 100 meters below. The wide basalt cliff, over which the falls thunder, transforms the Zambezi from a wide placid river to a ferocious torrent cutting through a series of dramatic gorges.

The highest falls water levels are February through to April. During this period, the spray is heavy, so prepare for a drenching – part of the total Falls experience! Raincoats and umbrellas are available. In the drier months, river levels fall, allowing for an appreciation of the cavernous Batoka Gorge and spectacular photographic opportunities. We advise you to try out the Falls in different seasons.

Facing the Falls is another sheer wall of basalt, rising to the same height and capped by mist-soaked rain forest. A path along the edge of the forest provides the visitor who is prepared to brave the tremendous spray with an unparalleled series of views of the Falls.

One special vantage point is across the Knife edge bridge, where visitors can have the finest view of the Eastern Cataract and the Main Falls as well as the Boiling Pot where the river turns and heads down the Batoka Gorge. Other vantage points include the Falls bridge and the Lookout Tree which commands a panoramic view across the Main Falls.

Today, Victoria Falls remains as evocative a destination as it did to the hunters, surveyors, explorers and missionaries of the 19th Century.

By road:

From Kazangula - Turn right to go to Livingstone and continue for about 10 km were you will see the Royal Chundu board on the right side of the road. Turn right and follow the boards to the lodge for 11km.

From Livingstone - Take the road to Katima Mililo (nakatindi Road) continue for about 50km and the Royal Chundu board will be on you left hand side of the road. Turn left and follow the boards for 11km to the lodge.

From Victoria Falls border post - Drive into Livingstone town (about 8km)on Mosi-oa-Tunnya road, opposite the Shoprite mall, Nakatindi road goes out to your left. Take that road for about 50km and you will see the Royal Chundu board on your left. Turn left and follow the boards for 11km to the lodge.
