Chobe National Park

The Chobe National Park, which is the second largest national park in Botswana and covers 10,566 square kilometres, has one of the greatest concentrations of game found on the African continent. Its abundance of wildlife and the true African nature of the region offer a safari experience of a lifetime.

It was in 1931 that the idea of forming a national park to protect the various wildlife in the area and promote tourism was first proposed. The following year, 24 000 km² were declared a non-hunting area and within the next two years, the protected area had increased to 31 600 km². However, a tsetse fly infestation in 1943 resulted in the idea being abandoned, and it was only in 1953 that the project received government attention. The Chobe Game Reserve was born in 1960 and declared a national park in 1967.

The park is located in the north eastern district of Botswana, with the exquisite Chobe River forming the northern border of the park. To the south west is the breath-taking Okavango Delta and Moremi Game Reserve, with the Chobe forest reserves to the east. With the Zimbabwean border running parallel to the forest reserves in the east and Victoria Falls less than 100 km away, it offers the ideal location for visitors seeking a unique combination of natural beauty and wildlife sightings.

While a number of beautiful creatures such as hippopotamus, buffalo, zebra, lion, hyena, red lechwe, crocodile, sable antelope and impala traverse the golden plains, the Chobe National Park is perhaps most widely known for its spectacular population of elephants that is estimated to be 50 000.
