About Victoria Falls
The Victoria Falls is one of the most spectacular natural wonders of the world. The Local people call it “Mosi-oa-Tunya” meaning the smoke that thunders and is a waterfall in southern Africa on the Zambezi River at the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.
There is a magic manifested in the towering column of spray when the river is high, the thunder of the falling water and tranquil lagoons upstream in which hippo and deadly crocodiles lurk.
The Victoria falls is 1708 meters wide, making it the largest curtain of water in the world dropping between 90m and 107m into the Zambezi Gorge and an average of 550,000 cubic metres of water plummet over the edge every minute.
Remarkably preserved in its natural state, Victoria falls inspires visitors as much today as it did David Livingstone in the 1860’s. The falls and the surrounding area have been declared a National Park and a World Heritage Site.
Victoria Falls is one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World. Statistically speaking, it is the largest waterfalls in the world. Livingstone named the falls after the reining queen at the time.
What is there to do in Victoria Falls?
Apart from viewing the magnificent Victoria Falls, there is an activity to suit just about everybody’s dreams such as white water rafting, bungee jumping, kayaking and canoeing, gorge swing, zip wire, flying fox, sunset cruises on the Zambezi, game viewing activities, walking safaris, horseback safaris, fishing, golf, helicopter scenic flights, cultural experiences and lots of local crafts. Masuwe Lodge would love to help you plan your African dream experience of Victoria Falls.
When is the best time to visit Victoria Falls?
With an average of 8 hours’ sunshine per day, Victoria Falls is beautiful every day of the year. From the end of August, the temperatures start rising, and by November it is very hot and dry. The typical African landscape turns very brown and can feel a bit harsh. However, this is the best time for game viewing.
By November we all hope for the rains to arrive and the days can be hot and muggy. Rarely does it rain all day, rather thunder storms build up in the late afternoon and a torrential downpour refreshes all. The golden light after a storm makes for wonderful photography.
Sometime between February and April the Zambezi headwaters arrive from upstream in Zambia and Angola and the spray from the Falls is tremendous. Photography and visibility can be hampered by the continual downpour.
Our winter months are from early May to mid-August and day time temperatures drop into the mid 20’s Celsius / 70’s Fahrenheit. Generally, the skies are cloudless and beautifully blue, making this a very pleasant time of year. Evening and early mornings can be very cool and it is always advisable to pack some long pants and a sweater – especially if you plan to do some early morning game viewing.
Masuwe Lodge is situated on 1000 hectares of natural bushland which is home to wildlife including bush buck, kudu, sable, leopard, warthogs, impala and much more. The area is frequented by almost 500 bird species. Our expert wildlife guides host early morning and evening walks on Masuwe, these are a great way to discover some of the smaller details of the bush and really feel immersed in the extraordinary natural landscape. Our neighbour is the Chamabonda National Park, a sub-section of the Zambezi National Park which begins at the Victoria Falls and stretches some 40 kms up-river. Masuwe guides know the Park intimately and on morning and evening game drives they may help you spot elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, a variety of antelope species, hyena, lion, leopard and more.
