The Victoria Falls were named after Queen Victoria by the first European to see them in 1855, David Livingstone. Today, the Falls are referred to by that name, as well as by that which was given to them by the Kololo tribe that lived in the area at a similar time - “Mosi-oa-Tunya”. This translates as “the Smoke that Thunders”. The Victoria Falls are located along the Zambezi River at the border between Zimbabwe and Zambia and whilst they may not be the highest or widest in the world, they are in fact the largest. The spray produced as the powerful waters gush over the edge of the basalt cliff into an impressive gorge below can be seen from a far distance, hinting at the sheer power they possess. The Zambezi River is quickly transformed from a calm body of water into swirling torrents.
Witnessing the Falls in all their glory is a truly awe-inspiring sight and their grandeur is unlike anything else in nature. There are many spots from which to view the mighty Falls, one of which is the Knife-Edge Bridge. From here you’ll be treated to the finest view of the Eastern Cataract as well as the Main Falls. The Boiling Pot, where the river turns and heads down the Batoka Gorge, is also visible from this point. Other great vantage areas include Devil’s Pool in which some brave visitors choose to swim, as well as the Falls Bridge and the Lookout Tree. These lookout points provide some of the most breath-taking views of the majestic Victoria Falls. A visit to the Victoria Falls is a chance to come face to face with the power of Mother Nature and a true natural wonder. It’s a must-see.
