About Makuleke Contract Park
Makuleke Contractual Park – The Soul of Northern Kruger
Spanning 26,500 hectares in the remote northern corner of Kruger National Park, Makuleke Contractual Park is a landscape of astonishing diversity, rich history, and deep cultural meaning. This land, once lost and later returned to the Makuleke people, is now a leading example of community-led conservation and one of the most ecologically important regions in Southern Africa.
Framed by two great rivers — the Limpopo and the Luvuvhu — the park boasts baobab-studded ridges, cathedral-like fever tree forests, wetlands, gorges, and over 30 seasonal pans that teem with wildlife. It is home to South Africa’s highest densities of nyala and eland, vast herds of elephant and buffalo, and elusive species like leopard, Sharpe’s grysbok, and Pel’s fishing owl. Predators such as lion, cheetah, and wild dog sometimes pass through, while spotted hyenas, totem of the Makuleke, reign over the floodplains.
Pafuri is South Africa’s premier walking safari destination, where travellers reconnect with the land by moving through it on foot — tuning into ancient rhythms, uncovering stories in stone, and feeling the pulse of the bush. Guests might stand in awe beneath a thousand-year-old baobab, explore archaeological ruins like Thulamela, or visit iconic sites such as Crooks Corner and Lanner Gorge.
This is not just a place of wilderness, but of deep memory and living culture. It’s where elephants cross ancient migratory routes, where Makuleke traditions endure, and where every tree, track, and whisper of wind tells a story. In this sacred corner of Kruger, nature, heritage, and community are woven into one unforgettable journey.
