About Makanyi Private Game Lodge
Makanyi Private Game Lodge is in the southern sector of the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the Greater Kruger National Park.
Throughout your stay at Makanyi, comfort and pleasure are priority, which is why the lodge strives to ensure that every detail is just right, both indoors and outdoors. From every aspect of your suite, to your food and drinks and your game drives, at Makanyi, quality and service are watchwords.
The Main Lodge is a perfect haven where you will find a superbly situated deck with stunning views of the dam, allowing you to unwind and watch amazing wildlife scenes unfold before your eyes. It is a lovely area to either relax on your own and take in the beauty of your surroundings or to socialise with others and share stories about your sightings. The sun loungers around the pool are perfect for sunbathing with a cocktail, whilst our cosy loft serves as a quiet place to read. In the main area there are large comfortable sofas to enjoy or sit around our boma fire to keep warm on a chilling evening listening to the sounds of the night. Alternatively, mingle with other guests at the bar where our barman are ready to prepare you your favourite drink and share stories of your day’s sightings.

Indeed, Makanyi Lodge itself is a heavenly place and, what’s more, it couldn’t be better located. The Timbavati is an area of prime game viewing, home to the Big Five. We are in the Greater Kruger National Park, an area of over 2.4 million hectares in which animals roam freely and, being one of very few commercial lodges in this area, it is a truly wild and private experience.

Getting There
NOTE: Do not use Makanyi Private Game Lodge co-ordinates or name as a location on any navigation apps. Most of the routes you’ll find on those apps are no longer accessible to the Reserve or Lodge.
You can use Hoedspruit East Gate Airport as your location point and then follow the written directions below to Makanyi.
The Timbavati has an online security system where all guest’s information is added.
Guests to provide the below 24-28 hours prior to arrival to allow entry and exit into the reserve via the Enkhulu Control Gate.

FROM JOHANNESBURG
- Take the N4 direction Witbank – Pass Emalahleni and Middelburg.
- Take the Belfast off ramp (R33/R540).
- Once in Belfast town, turn right into Voortrekker Street (at the bottom of the town) and continue straight to Dullstroom on R540.
- Drive straight through Dullstroom town and continue to Lydenburg.
- Once in Lydenburg turn left into Potgieter Street and follow the road out of town direction Ohrighstad on the R36.
- Drive through Ohrighstad and continue on R36 (though the Strydom tunnel and over the Abel Erasmus Pass) R531 to Hoedspruit.
- In Hoedspruit, continue straight over the bridge crossing the train line to a four way stop. At the stop turn right. You will get to a 3 way stop, which you will cross over and continue towards Bosbokrand / Bushbuckridge along the R40.
- Approx 6 – 7 km out of Hoedspruit, note the Eastgate Airport / Timbavati Private Nature Reserve sign on your left.
- At the sign, turn left.
- Drive ±15km until you reach Timbavati Private Nature Reserve Control Gate.
- At the entrance gate, you will be required to pay an entrance fee.
- Continue for ±13 km, until you see a stone plinth with a Makanyi Lodge sign on your left, turn right at the sign.
- Continue for ±17 km, until you see a stone plinth with a Makanyi Lodge sign in front of you, turn left at the sign.
- Follow signboards to the lodge for an additional 5km.
FROM NELSPRUIT
- From Nelspruit head out direction White River.
- Carry straight through the town of White River and turn left, direction Hazyview, at the last set of traffic lights. At the roundabout carry on straight direction Hazyview.
- Follow this road and here the road ends – turn left and go through the town of Hazyview R40.
- After Hazyview, you will go through Bushbuckridge and Acornhoek. Do not turn into towns – go straight. Once you passed Acornhoek, you will find a road to your right “Orpen Road” – do not turn in there, but carry on straight for another 2 km. Look out for the Hoedspruit / Phalaborwa sign board. Turn right here and follow this road for approximately 18 – 19 km until you get the turn off to the right “Eastgate Airport / Timbavati Private Nature Reserve “. At this sign, turn right.
- Drive ±15km until you reach the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve Control Gate.
