Whale watching heaven
Ocean House offers a bird’s eye view of the continent’s greatest whale nursery, as Southern Right whales migrate to the shallow coastal basins off the Overberg Coast for the calving and nursing season from mid-July to November. Morukuru Ocean House can accommodate 8 adults & 4 children (all ages are welcome!). The 4 suites all have their own en-suite bathrooms and glass doors overlooking the ocean. The interior design is inspired by the surrounding fynbos dunes and is of the highest quality. Morukuru Ocean House includes the same features as those you will find at our private houses situated within the Madikwe Game Reserve: amazing views, top service, a wide range of activities from guided marine walks and mountain-biking to sandboarding and of course 100% privacy. Morukuru Ocean House also operates according to the famous Morukuru Freedom Concept: no schedules! About The Garden Route
ABOUT DE HOOP NATURE RESERVE
Morukuru Ocean House is situated in one of Africa’s most beautiful coastal reserves: De Hoop Nature Reserve, just south of Swellendam along the Garden Route in the Overberg region. The Overberg is characterized by quaint towns, a blossoming wine industry and delicious local dishes. The 36 000 hectares of De Hoop conservation area is a World Heritage Site comprising rich biodiversity and over 50 kilometres of pristine coastline. A 19 km vlei (wetland) stretches across the reserve, which is on the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance, established by UNESCO.
De Hoop Nature Reserve also offers towering white sand dunes lapped by the Indian Ocean, limestone cliffs, rock pools and coastal fynbos. Our sister property Morukuru Beach Lodge is located ± 1 km further west along the beach
Getting There
FROM CAPE TOWN (SCENIC ROUTE 3.5 – 4 HOURS)
Take the N2 to Caledon. From Caledon drive on the R316 through Napier to Bredasdorp. From Bredasdorp take the R319 to Swellendam out of town for about 6kms and then turn right – sign posted De Hoop / Malgas / Infanta. Travel on the gravel road for 33kms until you see a sign to the right – BUCHU BUSHCAMP / DE HOOP. It is 7km from this turn off to the Main Gate of the Park. You will be met at the Main Gate and escorted to Morukuru Ocean House.
FROM CAPE TOWN (FASTEST AND EASIEST ROUT 3.5 HOURS)
Travel on the N2 from Cape Town to Swellendam, past Caledon and Riviersonderend. Pass the Bredasdorp turn off and look out for Spitskop turnoff on your right (it is 13km before Swellendam). Turn right onto the Spitskop road and travel for approx 45km until you get to a T-junction. Turn left at the T-junction signed Malgas / Infanta and travel approx 2km before you turn right onto the De Hoop Pad signed BUCHU BUSHCAMP / DE HOOP. It is 7km from this turn off to the Main Gate of the Park. You will be met at the Main Gate and escorted to Morukuru Ocean House.
FROM GEORGE / SWELLENDAM (4 HOURS)
Travel on the N2 from George in the direction of CapeTown. 13km past Swellendam turn left onto gravel road, signed Spitskop. Continue on this road for about 45km until you reach a T-junction. Turn left at the T-junction signed Malgas / Infanta and travel approx 2km before you turn right onto the De Hoop Pad signed BUCHU BUSHCAMP / DE HOOP. It is 7km from this turn off to the Main Gate of the Park. You will be met at the Main Gate and escorted to Morukuru Ocean House.
