About Shumbalala Game Lodge
Set under shady African trees lining the Monwana River, Shumbalala Safari Lodge is found in the heart of the 11,000 ha Thornybush Game Reserve and offers guests an untamed African safari in absolute luxury and privacy.
This exclusive game lodge comprises four Superior Suites and a two bedroomed Presidential Suite with private viewing decks and accommodates a small number of guests at a time, for ultimate tranquillity. Daily morning and evening Big 5 safari game drives by qualified rangers and experienced trackers, offering guests close range game viewing opportunities.
All the suites have overhead fans, air-conditioning, open fireplaces, and designer “picture window” bathroom suites that include an additional outside shower for the more adventurous and a private viewing deck.
To ensure absolute exclusivity and privacy, the lodge normally accommodates only eight guests at a time.
The two bed-roomed Presidential Suite, in addition to all of the facilities of the superior suites, boasts a separate dining room, lounge, a private pool deck and pool, and a fireside facility – the ultimate in opulence and exclusivity!
In addition to the game viewing decks and swimming pools at the main lodge, there are two lounges, a curio shop and a library in which to relax between game drives.
Sumptuous cuisine prepared by the well trained chef is enjoyed either on the lodge decks positioned to ensure scenic vistas, or by candlelight in more formal surroundings in the main dining room accompanied by a crackling fire in winter. Open air fire-side dinners are an occasion, and an opportunity to share your experience.

Getting There
BY ROAD
The best way to travel is to follow the N4 from the airport past Witbank & Middelburg until you reach the Belfast turnoff.
Turn left on the R40 through Belfast and take the road through Dullstroom (good place to stop for something to eat). Then through Lydenburg, Orighstad and through the Strijdom tunnel.
Onto Hoedspruit where you turn right on the R40 and left (after about 5km) at the Eastgate Airport sign. Pass the airport on your left and just after the road becomes gravel, turn right and follow the signs to the Thornybush Reserve.
After about 10km turn left into the Thornybush gate and continue into the reserve to the car park at the Main lodge where our ranger will be ready to collect you.

Daily charter flights are available, flying directly to the airstrip in the Thornybush Game Reserve.
FROM THE SOUTH ON THE R 40
ON THE R 40 FROM BUSHBUCKRIDGE
- Continue through Acornhoek towards Klaserie (do not turn at Acornhoek)
- Continue for about 7 km
- Turn right onto R40 Phalaborwa, Eastgate Airport, travel 1 km
- Turn right onto Guernsey Road (large brown thornybush sign on left)
- Travel 11,6 km (note: the road gives way to dirt at 7,5 km)
- Turn left at the T-Junction (brown Thornybush sign)
- Continue a further 6,3 km to Thornybush Game Reserve gate on right
- Follow signage to Thornybush Game Lodge for all guests checking in at Thornybush Game Lodge, Shumbalala, Monwana, Serondella, n’Kaya and Nkelenga
- Guests arriving to Chapungu Tented Camp, follow signage for Thornybush Game Lodge and continue to Chapungu Tented Camp as directed once in the Reserve.
FROM THE NORTH ON THE R 40
- At Hoedspruit take the R 40 south towards Bushbuckridge
- Continue 6 km and turn left at the Eastgate Airport sign / Argyle Road
- Continue 14 km (tarred road) and turn right onto Guernsey Road (following the signs to Thornybush Reserve)
- Continue 9km (gravel road) and turn left into the Thornybush Game Reserve gate
- Follow signage to Thornybush Game Lodge for all guests checking in at Thornybush Game Lodge, Shumbalala, Monwana, Serondella, n’Kaya and Nkelenga
- Guests arriving to Chapungu Tented Camp, follow signage for Thornybush Game Lodge and continue to Chapungu Tented Camp as directed once in the Reserve.
FROM JOHANNESBURG
- The N12 to Emalahleni (Witbank), where the N12 highway links up with the N4 highway
- Continue with the N4 in the direction Mbombela (Nelspruit).
- Approximately 60 km past Middleburg take the R 540 to your left.
- Travel though the towns of eMakhazeni (Belfast) and eMnotweni (Dullstroom) to Mashishing (Lydenburg)
- Take the R 36 (which becomes the R 527) towards Hoedspruit, passing through Origstad and descending down the Able Erasmus Pass

- Take the N4 in the direction Mbombela (Nelspruit)

- Turn left onto R538 White River, travel 1,7 km
- Turn right onto R40 Phalaborwa, travel 41 m to Hazyview
